CCS PreCollege Experience 2013 : Athletic Shoe Design

So this summer was my third and final year doing CCS's Pre-College Summer Experience. This year I studied Athletic Shoe Design, which is just a more specific part of Product Design. Our assignment was to select a company of our choice and design an athletic shoe according to a sport and company of our choice. While everyone chose companies well know for shoe design like Nike, Warrior, or Reebok; I decided to think outside of the box. I chose Aperture Science from Valve's wonderful game Portal, Portal: Still Alive, and Portal 2. I designed athletic shoes using the Aperture Testing Long Fall Boots as an inspiration to fit a Parkour Runner. This is the process work that went into the look of the final project, which will be uploaded at a later date.

It Ain't Easy.

Photo Quote that's definitely true and powerful! Some thing that's reassured me over the past semester. I've learned that just because something is getting you down and it may be a hard thing to go through it's not easy. However, If you stick with it and persevere you'll make it and it will definitely be worth every bit.

Self Expression Poem : "Compromise is Our Demise"

What’s our norm? What’s our standard?
Are they lesser, are they more?
How much do we value this thing called education?
Is “getting” a grade simply enough?
I mean as long as we keep this “standard” it shouldn’t matter.

Let’s compromise. After all compromise will be our demise.
Why accept this “standard”? The norms we choose to live by.
Why assimilate in to a culture where success
And being the best is a non-existent terminology?
But as long as it applies to us all; we’ll be alright, right?
We rush and we rush, not to understand, not to comprehend,
And not to give us an upper hand.
We rush to become ones who’ll be later pushed aside.

Our Youth, Our Youth!
They’re the most important things not just of today but of tomorrow.
They’re the future, they’re our futures; but let’s go ahead and loose em’.
Loose them to the standards.
Prep them for when they’ll have to be the leaders of tomorrow.

Let’s cheat them through, but it’s okay it doesn’t really matter.
Are they lesser, are they more? Why let them explore?
The standards are our norms…
 And we’ll all conform,
We’ll compromise and compromise
And let it be our beautiful demise.

My Portfolio Artwork 2012

So I actually got hold of some of my artwork from last semester with D.N.A.W., under the instruction of Leigh-Ann Foshee.

This was a grouped piece where I recreated and essence of the fairytale Red Riding Hood. I created a 8-10ft sculpture of the red cape that looked as if it stood alone over a stained wood organic shaped board, entitled "Not Just a Fairytale". Inside was a tree stump surrounded with moss and sticks and twigs, representing the forest. The installation was meant to look intimidating because of the size, but unusually warm and cozy within.

In addition, I created a glass mosaic that also reflected the fairytale, entitled "A Wolf in Her Clothing". It flipped the script of the common story, making the wolf the girl.

Consumed with the Desire

Warning.... In this post, I've gone completely geek.

I'm consumed with the desire to play.... SW:TOR (Star Wars: The Old Republic). It's no longer the two month phase I thought it would be. Let me explain... SW:TOR is an mmorpg, a massive multi-player online role playing game, it's the "spin-off" of Knights of the Old Republic I and II.The story line is amazing, I must thank Bioware for really upping their game. The game went free-to-play back in November of 2012 due to a large number drop in players. Since then the game has made a tremendous comeback and it's now thriving. The level cap for the game is 50, an expansion will be coming out soon changing the level cap to 55. If you're interested in the game you should definitely come and play! It's double xp weekends! You'd be a fool not to try it out. :)

Life's Short

I stumbled across this simple quote, and i feel it travels across generations. Life is something we may think ourselves as immortal, when in reality it's no where near close. So, the point is... just remember. "Life is fragile."

CE City

Over the past 5 weeks or so I've been in a program, CE City through the College of Creative Studies and Campbell Ewald, an advertising agency. As problem solvers, our goal was to come up with a commercial or public service announcement that addresses and encourages fathers to have a bigger impact on their child's life, pushing the idea of "Taking time to be a dad today". Last Wednesday my group along with 6 others presented in front of a crowd of people and judges. After the judges came together, they elaborated on the different commercials shown. After a nerve wrecking 20 minutes, they announced the winners. Not only was I surprised to hear our group be called, I was extremely proud and excited to have been in the program. Attached is the actual animatic we showed.

Education.

There's something I need to get off of my chest, questions I feel someone must ask. Why do we continue to hold such low expectations for our youth, but indirectly say that the expectations are high? Maybe, I'm saying this wrong, but it seems as if our message is incorrect. Why do we expect average and below average? Why do we give student loads of simple, tedious, low-stimulating work, in hopes that they'll improve. Improve what? Improve their abilities to recite, and copy? How is that beneficial? We say we want student to pass, to "succeed", when success is not what's going on.

There is a big difference in earning a grade and just receiving one. Unfortunately, that fine line is non-existent. How can this change? How can I change it? How can we change it? Let's start my encouraging youth, and instead of teaching the "ability" let's learn the SKILL. What does that mean, you ask? It means, lets empower our youth, the future leaders of tomorrow. Teaching youth to learn the skills, like analyzing, evaluating, and synthesizing and not opening a textbook and copying it onto a sheet of wide ruled paper. Instead of sitting in a class where you learn by repeating what you hear, lets go to a class where we apply our real life experiences into the lesson.

Why not engage students in things that are beneficial. Don't know how to? Why not ask the ones who are receiving the lesson? Does that seem like a good way to start? I definitely think so. If my random rant was annoying for you, then I'm sorry, and if it doesn't apply to you then re-think and re-evaluate your surroundings. Think about what you've read and ask yourself, is it worth learning how to recite, when the SKILL is what determines the successfulness of your future.
